Class work

Analysis of Poster(Britain women)

Observing its words- It has a message printed on it saying, ‘WOMEN OF BRITAIN COME INTO THE FACTORIES’. The next statement says, "Ask any of the employment exchange for advice and full details". It tells us that the factories in Britain never had never employed women, but now they do. The second quote tells us what should the women do to eventually get work at the factories.

Observing its visuals- The poster shows a woman spreading her arms wide open, this shows a dominance of women in the factories after women were allowed to work. In the background, they show factories on one side of the women and army tanks, weapons on the other side. In the sky, they show fighter plains. All these symbolize that the welcome of women working in the factory was not always supported by and shows that it was not an easy task to work in the factories. The is orange because it shows us that the future of women working in factories may not be bright.

Trying to make sense of it- This poster could be from the 1700s in Britain. At this point of time in history, the Industrial Revolution was taking place. This poster is mainly targeted at women who are looking for jobs to help support their families. During that time, a lot of workers were employed including women.

Using it as historical evidence- This poster teaches us that women are equal to men, and they should be treated equally. We all know this was a problem in the 18th and 19th centuries. This may not be taught in any textbook at schools that you should treat every gender equally. Although we have learned about the industrial revolution in the subject History.

Analyzing a Non literary text- Letter

Text type/form- Letter to the Editor

-(‘Kathy A’ )Signed name at the end of the text

-(‘fully appreciate the fact that The Times is encouraging us to talk and write’) indicates that this is a letter from a reader to the Editor of the Times Newspaper

-(‘I applaud the plea by Kimberly Probolus for men to become active and engaged listeners’)shows that this letter is a response to an article written by Kimberly Probolus in the Times.

Themes/main idea- The reader appreciates the efforts of Kimberly Probulus (the writer of the article) to make men better listeners through her article, but is skeptical about whether it will happen.

The theme of the article published in the Newspaper is “How men could become active and engaged listeners” We know this from the sentence (I appreciate the plea by Kimberly Probolus for men to become active and engaged listeners, even going so far as to request that they look up from their newspapers or screens and ask the women across from them, “How can I be a better listener?”)

The writer of the letter disagrees with the author’s point of view (I have lived for over three-quarters of a century and have never seen this happen, and I can almost assure Dr. Probolus that it never will)

Stylistic features- Use of the personal pronoun ‘I’ gives a personal touch, making it more direct and conversational(‘I applaud the plea by Kimberly Probolus….)

Litotes, which is an ironic understatement in which an affirmative is expressed by the negative of its contrary is seen in the text where words that usually have a positive connotation express appreciation (I applaud/ I appreciate) but convey a sense of cynicism (I applaud the plea by Kimberly Probolus for men to become active and engaged listeners…. I have lived for over three-quarters of a century and have never seen this happen, and I can almost assure Dr. Probolus that it never will)

The text raises a counter view (Men will not change, as Dr. Probolus hopes they will)(juxtaposition)

Personal opinion(Men will not change, as Dr. Probolus hopes they will)

Irony (So what women have to do is band together to raise their voices louder, to talk and write more often, speak more in unison, and keep our wonderful sense of humor, our caring natures, our ability to totally focus on speakers and ask intelligent questions, and then fully appreciate the fact that The Times is encouraging us to talk and write. At least, that’s a start!)

Cynicism (I have lived for over three-quarters of a century and have never seen this happen, and I can almost assure Dr. Probolus that it never will’)

Tone/ mood- Informal, lighthearted, and cynical. The informal language indicates a conversational tone (At least, that’s a start)

Humor (fully appreciate the fact that The Times is encouraging us to talk and write. At least, that’s a start)

Cynicism (I have lived for over three-quarters of a century and have never seen this happen, and I can almost assure Dr. Probolus that it never will’)

Layout/structure- Paragraphing (The text uses paragraphs to elaborate on the views of the writer).

Clear address to a specific person (To the Editor)

Closing subscription (Kathy A)

Analysis of Advertisement(Coca Cola)

OVERVIEW- The ad presents a pretty woman and the idea of skinniness, which consumers would be attracted to. In addition to this idea, the woman's outfit, makeup, and the fact that she is drinking the soda through a straw can reveal that she is classy and even wealthy. This implies that classy and wealthy people drink Diet Pepsi. The slim can also make it seem as though there is more quantity of Pepsi in the can which helps to attract more consumers to buy their product.

PURPOSE- The purpose of this advertisement is to convey to all the Pepsi lovers that they have introduced a new skinny can which is easy to carry everywhere. This will most likely increase the number of customers buying Pepsi as they feel it’s much easier to handle the skinny can.  Also making the can skinnier will make it look like there is more Pepsi in the can, which can also increase the number of people buying Pepsi.

AUDIENCE- The target audience for this advertisement is all the men and women in the world. The advertisement also uses a pretty woman to attract more people to buy the drink. The advertisement is also trying to convey that if they drink Pepsi they will become much more pretty/handsome, just like the women.  The advertisement also attracts people concerned about Pepsi being unhealthy by saying that this new form of diet Pepsi can actually make a person thin.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE CAN-

-The Pepsi advertisement is for diet Pepsi instead of regular Pepsi which could be the reason why the can is skinny.

-The fact that the woman is drinking the Pepsi using a straw shows that she  is classy and wealthy which implies that classy people drink diet Pepsi

-The woman drinking the Pepsi is also skinny which may make the viewers think that they could become skinny like her if they drank the diet Pepsi.

FONT USED IN THE AD

-The font used in the ad is skinny which symbolizes what the ad is for the diet Pepsi.

-The color of the font is the same as the color of the soda and therefore the colors are consistent throughout the advertisement.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE WOMEN-

-The woman in the ad is wearing a very large sun hat and bright red lipstick which could suggest that she is a very classy woman.

-The woman’s face is half covered by the hat so that the main attraction of the ad stays with the Pepsi can instead of her face.

-She is also wearing blue which is the most dominant color in the ad.

-And the woman in this ad could be there for the purpose of sex appeal and to stand out for the male customers.

ABOUT THE TONE/LIGHTING USED-

-The lighting is a studio light with a blue background behind the model

-It is a very simple Ad with a contrast of the silver can on the blue background

-The background is blue as well as many elements in the advertisement and therefore the colors are consistent throughout the advertisement.
